Falls are a major cause of disability and the leading cause of mortality resulting from injury in people aged above 75 in the UK.
Each year, over 700,000 older people in the UK attend emergency departments following a fall.
In people aged 65 and over, "falls", together with resulting fractures, account for over four million ‘bed days’ each year in England alone. The consequences of a fall can be life changing, and in many cases life threatening.
Hip fractures are the most serious consequence, and are associated with a mortality rate of 20% within four months and 30% within a year. Fourteen thousand people die annually in the UK as a result of osteoporotic hip fractures.
POOR VISION IS A MAJOR FACTOR IN FALLS RISK!
Vision guides both movement and balance. Ageing, injury and brain injury can all affect our balance and stability. Badly prescribed glasses, incorrect or out of date specs, bifocals and varifocals can all affect our balance
At Shaylers Vision Centre, we have a number of visual tests, not generally found in High Street opticians, that allow us to diagnose and treat vision related balance problems
If you have suffered a fall in the past year, ask us about how we can work together to reduce your risk of further falls
